As one of the most influential designers of our time, Raf Simons is a cultural pillar, who helped shape menswear into the success it is today. After graduating in Industrial Design and Furniture Design, he made the drastic switch to become a self-trained menswear designer in 1995, launching his own namesake label. The Belgian is recognized for his deep knowledge and understanding of rebellious youth cultures, which he effortlessly merges with traditional menswear. His collections are inspired by and made for confident outsiders and take pride in individuality. Over the years some of the most prestigious houses in fashion have appointed Simons to elevate their brands, among them Jil Sander, Dior, Calvin Klein and most recently Prada, which he co-creative directs alongside Miuccia Prada. Some of his most prominent work however came in the form of a line of collaborative sneakers with adidas, lasting from 2013 to 2019. Now fully established as a major force in footwear, Raf Simons has independently launched his newest line titled Raf Simons (Runner). In an investigative clash of form and function, the range combines classical and contemporary elements. “I don’t want to make pretty shoes that people can’t wear.”, the designer was quoted. And so, while the shoes are not meant for performance use, the development and high-end manufacturing of the (Runner) line consists of the same raw ingredients as most athletic shoes, resulting in beautiful sneaker-inspired footwear. Once again, in a striking balance of high and low, Raf Simons incorporates a real-world point-of-view into his artistic vision as only he can.
