what is the origin of undercover?
Jun Takahashi started Undercover while still a student at the prestigious Bunka Fashion College in 1990. Inspired and encouraged by people like Comme des Garçons’ Rei Kawakubo and Hiroshi Fujiwara, his collections carried a strong punk aesthetic from the beginning, making it a cult-favorite on the streets. His involvement in the Last Orgy 2 column together with Nigo in Japan’s Takarajima Magazine and Nowhere, the legendary, now defunct, store they opened in 1993, further amplified his position on the backstreets of Harajuku.
why is undercover's design unique?
On the flipside the immaculate attention to detail and undeniable elegance helped springboard the brands reputation in Paris, where Takahashi started showing his women’s collections in 2002. The juxtaposition of high and low, now the modus operandi of an entire industry, was spearheaded by Undercover since the 90s. However instead of a clash of opposites, it rather feels like a harmonious conversation between two sides of the same coin, which are in stark contrast but cannot survive without the other. This idea is manifested in pieces adorned with the words “Chaos” and “Balance” or in punk band t-shirts repurposed as evening dresses, as seen in his spring/summer 2006 collection.
undercover more than a fashion brand
In addition to beautiful clothes, the Japanese brand offers great discourse for those willing to look past the surface. From punk values, iconic film references, fictional superheroes to even fictional bands, Undercover has created a universe unlike any other brand. And thus it is no surprise that Undercover's slogan rightfully claims: “We Make Noise, Not Clothes!”
