who is the face behind fucking awesome?
Fucking Awesome is a skatebrand created by Jason Dill. A modern skateboarding legend, Dill skated for iconic brands such as Alien Workshop or Supreme among others. If you don’t know his name, chances are you’re still very familiar with his face as he modeled many Supreme collections and fronted the cover of Thrasher twice.
the evolution of fucking awesome
After moving to New York in 1998 and being fully immersed in the downtown skate and art scenes, he occupied the last part of Alien Workshop’s seminal skate-video “Photosynthesis”. By now he was a certified rockstar. Soon after, in 2001, he started a brand simply called “Dill”, which was sold at Supreme stores in New York and Japan. The name only stuck for a short while and a 21-year old Dill, “out of [his] gourd”, would go on to change it to Fucking Awesome. The company, run by Dill, Mike Piscitelli and Anthony Van Engelen (himself a former Skater of the Year), is now one of the foremost entities in skateboarding. What was jokingly called Fucking Awesome, has become a legitimate brand of boards and clothing, complete with a skate team and actual responsibilities.
what makes fucking awesome recognizable?
Just like Jason Dill had to overcome existential battles with drugs, FA had to overcome its name and evolve into a mature version of itself. The many collage like designs often depict images of dictators, FA team members, art or violence. It is an almost humorous reflection of reality. And it is this fundamental essence that makes Fucking Awesome stand out from the rest. None of the images are found or designed on the computer. Everything comes from offline sources like books or travel impressions. It is Dill’s first real job, that was never supposed to be a job. Equally sober and high, the brand tells the eclectic coming of age story of skateboarding and streetwear as a whole.
