A brief history of Eastpak

Founded in Boston in 1952 as Eastern Canvas Products, the company initially started off making duffel bags, backpacks and safety equipment for the US Military. When college students started using their canvas bags to carry their books on campus in the 70s, founder Monte Goldman’s son Mark had the ingenious idea to create a line of bags specifically geared towards the wider population. And thus, Eastpak was born in 1976 and found great success, soon dominating east coast campuses. The introduction of bright colors and all-over prints saw the brand expand its audience exponentially and as a result Eastpak made impressive strides into the international market. Today it is one of the world’s best-known lifestyle brands.

What is Eastpak’s cultural impact?

Over the years, Eastpak has established itself as a tool for self-expression. The canvas bags have often been an actual canvas for students to draw and doodle on, sew patches on to, or simply represent, who they are through their favorite color or pattern. Since then, many different subcultures have adopted the brands products, which came to signify resistance not only in a material sense. With the international expansion, Eastpak was introduced to a new audience and in 2004 presented its first designer collaboration with Walter Van Beirendonck. Many collaborations with some of the world’s most prolific designers and brands followed, including Raf Simons, Kris Van Assche, Undercover, Aries Arise and more, proving Eastpak’s status as an ever adaptable and customizable canvas for creativity.
