Rassvet, pronounced rass-vyet (рассвет / Пакбет in its native Cyrillic) is a Russian skate brand founded by designer / photographer Gosha Rubchinskiy and pro-skater Tolia Titaev. The name translates to dawn or sunrise and is emblematic of a new generation of young and creative Russians introducing their point of view to the world, a story which is also told by the brands sunrise logo. A master at spinning western styles in a distinctly eastern way, Rubchinchskiy’s take on skatewear is uniquely different and simultaneously eerily familiar.

Rassvet was founded in 2016 under the Comme des Garçons umbrella, which Gosha Rubchinskiy had been a part of for years. While the brand is sold at select stores worldwide today, it was initially exclusive to Dover Street Markets, Comme des Garçons stores, and Oktyabr, (Rubchinskiy’s and Titaev’s skate shop in Moscow).

What is rassvet’s cultural relevance?

When Tolia Titaev and Gosha Rubchinskiy launched Rassvet, their initial goal was to become the first Moscow-based brand to be recognized around the world and draw attention to the domestic skateboarding scene. Distribution to culturally relevant, international boutiques and Rubchinskiy’s prior reputation as a highly sought-after designer quickly made Rassvet part of the global skate conversation. The skate-team’s video releases make a case for skateboarding being a form of self-expression, no less original than music or visual arts, according to the founders.
